Winlink with ICOM 7300 Setup

The Icom IC-7300 is arguably the best radio for Winlink because it has a built-in soundcard. This means you don’t need a SignaLink or extra boxes—just a single USB cable (Type-A to Type-B) from the radio to your computer.

Here is how to “marry” your 7300 to Winlink Express.

1. The Physical Connection

  1. Driver First: Before plugging in the USB cable, ensure you have the Icom USB Driver installed on your PC (available on the Icom Japan website).
  2. Plug it in: Connect the USB cable.
  3. Check Device Manager: Note which COM Port number was assigned to the radio (e.g., COM3).

2. Radio Internal Settings (The “Menu”)

You must tell the 7300 to listen to the USB port for data instead of the microphone. Push the MENU button on your radio:

  • SET > Connectors > USB SQL: Off (Open)
  • SET > Connectors > DATA OFF MOD: MIC, ACC
  • SET > Connectors > DATA MOD: USB
  • SET > Connectors > CI-V > CI-V USB Port: Unlink from [REMOTE]
  • SET > Connectors > CI-V > CI-V USB Baud Rate: 19200 (or 9600, just remember it)
  • SET > Connectors > CI-V > CI-V USB Echo Back: ON

3. Winlink Software Setup (VARA HF)

For HF work on a 7300, VARA HF is the modern standard. It’s a “software modem” that handles the heavy lifting.

  1. Download and install VARA HF from rosmodem.wordpress.com.
  2. In Winlink Express, change the session dropdown to VARA HF Winlink and click Open Session.
  3. Inside the session window, go to Settings > Radio Setup:
    • Radio Model: Icom IC-7300
    • USB Address: 94h (Standard for 7300)
    • Serial Port: Select the COM port you found in Device Manager.
    • Baud Rate: Match what you set in the radio (e.g., 19200).
    • PTT Method: CI-V
  4. Go to Settings > VARA TNC Setup:
    • Make sure the path points to where you installed VARA.exe.

4. The “Golden Rule” of Levels

The most common mistake with the 7300 is “overdriving” the signal, which causes distortion and failed connections.

  • Radio Mode: Set the radio to USB-D (USB Data).
  • ALC Meter: When you transmit, your ALC meter should be at zero or barely moving.
  • Power: Start at 20–30 watts. You don’t need 100W for digital modes; it just gets the radio hot.
How to Find a Station

In your Winlink Session window, click Channel Selection.

  1. Click Update via Internet to get the latest list of worldwide gateways.
  2. Look for a station with a high “Reliability” score and a frequency that matches your current band (e.g., 40m or 20m).
  3. Double-click it, and your 7300 will automatically tune to that frequency.
