FreeDV is an open-source digital voice mode that allows you to transmit clear, digitized audio over the HF bands. Unlike proprietary modes like D-STAR or System Fusion, FreeDV is free to use and designed specifically to handle the “noise” and “fading” of the ionosphere.
1. What You’ll Need
To get started, you don’t necessarily need a “digital” radio. You just need a standard HF setup capable of SSB (Single Sideband).
- HF Transceiver: Any rig that supports SSB and can interface with a computer.
- Computer: Windows, Mac, or Linux (Raspberry Pi works too).
- Audio Interface: A “Soundcard-to-Radio” interface like a SignaLink USB, RigBlaster, or the built-in USB soundcard found in modern rigs (e.g., Icom IC-7300, Yaesu FTDX10).
- The Software: Download the latest version of the FreeDV application from FreeDV.org.
2. Choosing Your Mode
FreeDV has several “modes” depending on band conditions. When starting, focus on these two:

3. Setting Up the Software
Once installed, you need to “pipe” the audio correctly:
- Soundcard Settings:
- From Radio: Set this to the input coming from your transceiver (e.g., “USB Audio CODEC”).
- To Radio: Set this to the output going to your transceiver.
- To/From Speaker/Mic: Set these to your computer’s actual headset or internal speakers so you can hear and speak.
- PTT (Push-to-Talk):
- Go to Tools > PTT. Select the COM port your radio uses, or use VOX if your interface supports it.
- Levels: This is critical. Adjust your “To Radio” volume so that your radio’s ALC (Automatic Level Control) is barely moving. Overdriving the signal will cause “splatter” and make you unreadable.
4. Making Your First Contact
FreeDV isn’t as crowded as FT8, so you often have to look for people.
- The Watering Holes:
- 20 Meters: 14.236 MHz (Most active)
- 40 Meters: 7.177 MHz
- 80 Meters: 3.625 or 3.643 MHz
- The QSO Finder: Use the FreeDV QSO Finder website. It shows who is currently “spotting” on certain frequencies so you aren’t calling CQ into the void.
- Listen First: Tune your radio to the frequency in USB mode. You will hear a sound like a “warbling” digital tone. Once the FreeDV software “locks” onto the signal, the warble will stop and clear audio will come through your computer speakers.
5. Pro-Tips for Success
- Sync is Key: Your radio’s frequency display and the software’s “waterfall” must match. If someone is slightly off-frequency, you can click their signal in the waterfall to “center” it.
- Monitor the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR): The software will show you an SNR reading. If it’s above 2-3 dB, you should be able to decode audio perfectly.
- Check Your Windows Privacy: Ensure your “Microphone Privacy Settings” in Windows allow the FreeDV app to access your audio devices, or you’ll see a flat waterfall.
The “Golden Rule”: FreeDV is a “Center Frequency” mode. If the watering hole is 14.236 MHz, set your radio dial to exactly 14.236.00 USB and don’t touch it!
